BREATHING EXPLAINED

How the breathing system works in Demon Slayer, from Total Concentration to all 14 styles.

What is Breathing?

Breathing Styles are swordsmanship techniques used by the Demon Slayer Corps. By controlling their breathing pattern, swordsmen can dramatically enhance their physical abilities, strength, speed, and stamina far beyond normal human limits.

The technique was originally created by Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the strongest Demon Slayer in history. He developed Sun Breathing, and all other breathing styles are derived from it.

Total Concentration Breathing

Total Concentration Breathing is the foundation. It involves inhaling the maximum amount of oxygen and circulating it throughout the body. This accelerates blood flow and heart rate, raising the user\'s physical abilities to match demons.

Total Concentration: Constant is the advanced form, maintaining this breathing state 24/7, even while sleeping. This is what separates Hashira-level swordsmen from ordinary Demon Slayers.

The 14 Breathing Styles

There are 5 main styles derived directly from Sun Breathing: Water, Flame, Thunder, Wind, and Stone. Each of these has further derivatives.

Water Breathing: Fluid, adaptable. 11 forms. Users: Tanjiro, Giyu. Flame Breathing: Aggressive, powerful. 9 forms. Users: Rengoku. Thunder Breathing: Speed-focused, explosive. 7 forms. Users: Zenitsu. Wind Breathing: Sweeping, wide-range. 9 forms. Users: Sanemi. Stone Breathing: Defensive, heavy. 5 forms. Users: Gyomei.

Derivatives include: Mist, Love, Serpent, Insect, Sound, Flower, and Beast Breathing.

Nichirin Blades

Nichirin blades are the only weapons that can permanently kill demons (by decapitation). They are forged from a special ore that absorbs sunlight.

The blade changes color based on the wielder\'s breathing style: Blue = Water. Red = Flame. Yellow = Thunder. Green = Wind. Gray = Stone. White = Mist. Pink = Love. Lavender = Insect. Black = Sun (extremely rare, considered bad luck).

Demon Slayer Corps Ranks

From lowest to highest: Mizunoto, Mizunoe, Kanoto, Kanoe, Tsuchinoto, Tsuchinoe, Hinoto, Hinoe, Kinoto, Kinoe.

Above all ranks are the Hashira, the nine strongest swordsmen in the Corps. To become a Hashira, you must either: kill 50 demons as a Kinoe-ranked member, or kill a member of the Twelve Kizuki (Muzan\'s elite demons).

The Demon Slayer Mark

The Demon Slayer Mark is a special marking that appears on powerful swordsmen during intense battle. It dramatically increases all physical abilities.

The catch: any swordsman who awakens the Mark is fated to die before age 25. The only known exception was Yoriichi Tsugikuni, who lived past 80.
