Background
Muzan is the first demon and the source of every other one, a thousand years old and interested in exactly one thing: his own perfect, permanent survival. Every demon in the story carries his blood, and he can kill any of them through it, at any distance, for any failure. The Lower Ranks learned this in a single scene after Rui's death, when he summoned and executed nearly all of them for the crime of being disappointing.
His defining trait is pettiness at scale. He wears disguises and lives quietly, a family man in Asakusa when Tanjiro stumbles into him, because a Corps that cannot find him cannot kill him. He turned Tanjiro's family's deaths into an afterthought, punishes Akaza for honest reports, and demands results from subordinates he gives nothing to. For centuries his goal was the Blue Spider Lily, the flower he believes would let him conquer sunlight. The day Nezuko walked in the sun, he dropped that search entirely: why find a flower when he can eat the demon who already solved the problem?
Episode 63 is his boldest move and his worst miscalculation in one night. He walked into the Ubuyashiki mansion expecting a broken sick man and Nezuko's location, and instead got Kagaya's detonation, Tamayo's ambush, and a trap of his own making, as the whole Corps fell with him into the Infinity Castle.
Key Events
13 momentsNezuko, turned into a demon, fights her own hunger to shield Tanjiro. Whatever Muzan's blood did to her, part of her held.
Muzan Kibutsuji revealed as Demon King. Tanjiro follows a scent through Asakusa and comes face to face with the demon who killed his family, living as a human with an unsuspecting wife and daughter.
Muzan Kibutsuji, the first demon and the one who slaughtered the Kamado family, hides in plain sight in Asakusa as a husband and father.
First appearance. The first demon, the series' antagonist, met in a crowded street.
A scratch of Muzan's blood is enough to turn a passing stranger into a demon on the spot.
Tamayo defied Muzan and lived. She asks for Nezuko's blood to research a cure for demonhood.
Saying Muzan's name is death: the curse woven into demon blood destroys Susamaru from the inside.
Kyogai was excommunicated from the Twelve Kizuki when his Blood Demon Art stopped evolving. Demons are discarded the moment they stop being useful to Muzan.
Muzan dissolves the Lower Ranks in a single night. Enmu alone leaves the Infinity Castle, carrying fresh blood and orders to kill a Hashira.
Gyutaro's death is the first Upper Rank defeat in a hundred years, and it drags the remaining Upper Ranks in front of Muzan for the first time in a century.
Muzan's target changes: if he devours Nezuko, the sun stops being his cage. The Corps answers with joint Hashira Training.
Kagaya and Muzan come from the same bloodline. The Ubuyashiki family's curse and the Corps' thousand-year hunt share one origin.
Kagaya trades the Ubuyashiki Mansion and his own life for the opening blow, and Tamayo's Blood Demon Art pins Muzan long enough for the Hashira to converge.
