Background

Gyomei is the Stone Hashira, and the other Hashira speak of him plainly as the strongest of them. He is blind, enormous, permanently in tears, and armed with a spiked flail chained to an axe, a weapon no Breathing school teaches. The tears are not weakness; he cries easily because he feels everything and fights anyway.

His past came out during the Hashira training: he was a temple caretaker raising orphaned children, gentle and frail by his own account, until the night a demon came. The show lingers on the ordinary warmth before that night, a little girl named Sayo giving her fish to the too-skinny adult, precisely because of what it cost. Everything about who Gyomei became was forged by losing that household and being blamed for it, until Kagaya Ubuyashiki became the one person who believed him.

He runs the final and hardest stage of Hashira training, a regimen of boulder-pushing that most trainees never clear. Tanjiro cleared it. Gyomei is also Genya's master, the only Hashira who saw a use for a boy who could not breathe.
