Background
Obanai is the Serpent Hashira, a small, bandaged, mismatched-eyed man with a white snake named Kaburamaru draped around his shoulders and no patience for anyone he considers soft on the rules. At Tanjiro's trial he was among the loudest voices for punishment, and when Tengen announced his retirement after the Entertainment District, Obanai's answer was flat refusal: the Corps was bleeding Hashira and nobody had permission to stop. He holds others to a merciless standard and himself to a worse one.
The one visible crack in all that severity is Mitsuri Kanroji. Around her the sarcasm loses its edge and something almost gentle gets through, a fact everyone but Mitsuri seems to have noticed. The show has so far kept his own history closed; what it has shown instead is where he stands when it matters. Chasing a demon through the night with Sanemi, he caught a hostage thrown off a roof mid-pursuit, and the two of them became the first Corps members to lay eyes on Muzan's Infinity Castle.
At the Hashira training he runs the sword-handling stage, by broad consensus the most hated stop on the circuit, where already exhausted trainees fence a scowling expert who corrects them in insults. Tanjiro passed through it like he passes through everything, and even earned something adjacent to respect.
